Through the Amstelkwartier development, the City of Amsterdam is transforming the former industrial grounds around the historic Zuidergasfabriek into a mixed-use urban neighbourhood. Our proposal for a corner plot along an inlet of the Duivendrechtsevaart is a residential ensemble overlooking the water, with a communal garden opening onto the site of a future neighbourhood school. Sustainability is central to the design, which combines a cross-laminated timber structure with an innovative ventilation system integrated into the south- and west-facing facades, each developed around a distinct circular material strategy.

The block brings together dwellings of different sizes and price categories, organised around the principles of equality, sociability and spatial quality. A generous communal space in the corner building connects the inward-facing shared garden to the sunny public embankment.
Small-scale residential buildings with a manageable number of direct neighbours support a sense of comfort and community. All apartments are dual-aspect and have access to outdoor space, allowing residents to enjoy a coffee in the sun. All affordable rental apartments have a flexible third space that can be opened up to the living area or separated off as a guest room, home office or child's room.
